How to Change the Wi-Fi Password on Your SMA Inverter
If your inverter communicates with your router via Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi password is also set in the inverter. If you switch to a new router (for example, when changing providers) or if you have changed your Wi-Fi password, you will usually need to reconfigure the inverter to maintain communication. This step-by-step guide explains how to do this. This guide applies only to SMA inverters of the Sunny Boy and Sunny TriPower types that are equipped with Wi-Fi.

Follow the steps below:

-
Step 1: Before You Start
Make sure you have two codes at hand. One is the so-called WPA2-PSK code of the inverter. This code consists of 16 characters and can be found on the label on the inverter (on the right side of the device), or on the sticker on the back of the inverter's manual.

The other code you need is your new Wi-Fi password.
-
Step 2: Search for the Inverter’s Wi-Fi Network
First, you need to log into the inverter itself. You can do this with a PC with Wi-Fi, a tablet, or a smartphone. Search for the inverter’s network in the list of available Wi-Fi networks. You will recognize it by the name: SMA….. followed by some numbers. This is also the serial number of the inverter.

-
Step 3: Connect to the Wi-Fi Network
The SMA network will ask for a password. Enter the 16-character WPA2-PSK password here. The password is case-sensitive. Click 'Connect.'

If you entered the password correctly, you will now see 'Connected, no internet.' This is correct: your PC, smartphone, or tablet is now connected to the inverter but not to the internet.
-
Step 4: Enter the IP Address
Now, open a browser on your PC, smartphone, or tablet. For example, Safari on an iPhone or Chrome on an Android phone. We need to reach the login page of the inverter, so enter the following IP address in the browser's address bar: 192.168.12.3. If the SMA screen does not appear, you can try the old IP address 192.168.100.1.

-
Step 5: Login
To log in, select the user group 'Installer,' and as the password, either use : the four digits of your postal code followed by the letters in uppercase, an underscore, and lowercase 'zf' (for Zonnefabriek), which should look something like this: 1234AB_zf. In some cases we had to add a zero in front, so then you can try something like: 01234AB_zf. Or (for installations dating from before September 2019) only the 4 digits of your postal code (without the letters). Then click 'Log In.'

-
Step 6: Search for the Installation Wizard
Once logged in, we want to start the installation wizard. If you're using a smartphone or tablet, click on 'User Settings.' First you may have to click on the three horizontal stripes top right to make the User Settings appear. Note: If you’re working on a PC instead, click on the icon of a bust (on the right side of the blue bar).

-
Step 7: Start the Installation Wizard
Start the 'Installation Assistant' (sometimes called: 'Installation Wizard')

-
Step 8: Network Configuration
The next step is 'Network Configuration.' Scroll down and click on WLAN. WLAN stands for 'Wireless LAN,' which is the same as Wi-Fi (LAN stands for Local Area Network).

-
Step 9: Choose New Wi-Fi Network
You will see a list of all available Wi-Fi networks. One of the networks should be the network from your new router. (If this new network is not listed, you can perform a 'WLAN scan' via the button at the bottom of the page.). Click on the cog wheel next to the correct Wi-Fi network

-
Step 10: Change Network Settings
A pop-up box appears with the words 'WLAN settings': Click on that box

-
Step 11: Enter Wi-Fi Password
Enter your new Wi-Fi password and then click on the 'Connect to WLAN' button

-
Step 12: Check the status
If all went well, the status of the Wi-Fi connection will have changed to 'OK', with a green check mark next to it

-
Step 13: Save and Next
Scroll down to where you see a box on the right saying 'Save and Next'. Click on it

-
Step 14: Move to Summary
On the next few pages you don't have to change anything. Just look for the 'Save and Next' or 'Next' box on each page and click on it. In the end you will get to a 'Summary' page. Scroll down until you get to the box that says 'Next' and click on it.

-
Step 15: Finish
You will return to he inverter home screen. If everything went well, the communication with the new router—and thus with the internet and Sunny Portal—should now be established. You can now close the browser on your smartphone, tablet, or PC and reconnect your device to your own Wi-Fi network. Once the connection is successful, you will have a steady blue LED on your inverter. The graphs on Mijn Zonnefabriek or in the Zonnefabriek app will not update immediately; that usually takes a few hours.
